Reigning The Bowerman Trophy Winner Lendore Headlines Preseason Men’s Watch List

January 7, 2015

NEW ORLEANS – Three weeks ago to the day, Deon Lendore of Texas A&M hoisted The Bowerman Trophy in Phoenix, Arizona, as the top male collegiate track & field athlete of the 2013-14 season.

His path toward becoming the first repeat winner of either gender in the history of the award began Wednesday with The Bowerman Watch List Committee unveiling a men’s preseason Watch List for the 2014-15 award filled with familiar faces.

Lendore, the reigning indoor and outdoor 400-meter national champion, was joined on the 10-man Watch List by another 2014 The Bowerman Finalist in three-time national champion Edward Cheserek of Oregon, as well as seven more Semifinalists from the end of last season.

Oregon’s Devon AllenTrayvon Bromell of Baylor, Ryan Crouser of Texas, Marquis Dendy of Florida, Dedric Dukesof Florida, Brandon McBride of Mississippi State, and Anthony Rotich of UTEP returned as Semifinalists from a year ago.

The lone non-Semifinalist to join the list was Shawn Barber of Akron. Barber is also the only man on the list to have competed in 2014-15. The Zip pole vaulter, competing unattached at the Texas Expo Vault, cleared 19-3 (5.87m) for the best all-time indoor mark by a collegian. However, the USTFCCCA does not consider the clearance a collegiate record since he was unattached and the mark was not achieved in a full track & field meet.

No other man before Lendore in the six-year history of the award has won The Bowerman Trophy and had remaining collegiate eligibility, giving Lendore the opportunity to become the first repeat winner of the award for either gender.

Kimberlyn Duncan, the 2012 women’s winner, and 2013 women’s winner Brianna Rollins both had the same opportunity on the women’s side. Duncan did not advance past the Semifinalist stage, while Rollins elected to go professional following a IAAF World Championships title in the 100-meter hurdles.

Though Lendore is the reigning winner and is making his 10th career appearance on the Watch List, he is not the most veteran member of this 10-man list. Now that all-time Watch List appearance leader Lawi Lalang has exhausted his eligibility, defending indoor and outdoor shot put national champion Crouser is the active leader in appearances with 11.

Rotich, the defending indoor mile and outdoor 3000-meter steeplechase champion, is the next-most senior member of the list with nine appearances.

Reigning outdoor long jump and triple jump national champion Dendy of Florida made his seventh appearance, while national outdoor 200 meters champion teammate Dukes made his fifth. The duo gave Florida its 66th and 67th all-time Watch List appearance – well ahead of second-place Arizona with 26.

Rotich, Lendore, Dendy and Crouser were also all members of the 2014 preseason Watch List a year ago.

Sandwiched in between the two Gators was Cheserek making his sixth appearance. Joining him from Eugene was 110-meter hurdles champion Allen. Though Allen was a Semifinalist in 2014, this marked his first Watch List appearance. That duo gave Oregon 23 all-time appearances, quickly closing in on Arizona.

Barber and 100 meters national champion Bromell of Baylor both made their second showings on the Watch List, while defending indoor and outdoor 800 meters champion McBride of Mississippi State and Allen both appeared for the first time.

Four athletes who did not garner enough votes to make the top 10 were Johanes Hock of Texas, Andrew Irwin of Arkansas, Hayden Reed of Alabama and Michael Stigler of Kansas.

McBride joined Lendore, Dendy and Dukes to give the SEC four of the 10 preseason Watch List members, better than the two each from the Big 12 (Bromell and Crouser) and Pac-12 (Allen and Cheserek).

The SEC consequently grew its all-time Watch List appearance total to 133, well ahead of the Pac-12 with 96 and the Big 12 with 68.

ABOUT THE BOWERMAN

The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation.

Oregon’s Laura Roesler and Texas A&M’s Deon Lendore are the reigning winners of The Bowerman, which is named for legendary Oregon track & field and cross country coach Bill Bowerman.

Past winners include Olympic gold medalist, World Champion and decathlon world-record holder Ashton Eaton (2010), 10,000-meter Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp (2009), 2011 IAAF World Champion at 1500 meters Jenny Simpson (2009), 2013 100-meter hurdles World Champion Brianna Rollins (2013) and 2012 Olympic high jump bronze medalist Derek Drouin (2013).

In total, the winners from the award’s first four years have won two Olympic Medals, two World Championships and six World Championships medals. When considering finalists for the award, 13 individuals have earned a combined six Olympic medals, four World Championships and 17 World Championships medals.

Bowerman served the sport of track and field in numerous ways. His leadership in the USTFCCCA’s predecessor organization, the National Collegiate Track Coaches Association, and his contributions to NCAA track and field and the running community as a whole are among his many lasting legacies.
